Women in Armed Forces:

  • In 1888, women were recruited for the Indian Military Nursing Service. It was only in 1992, that women officers were inducted into non-medical roles in the armed forces, but only as short-service commission (SSC) officers.
  • In 2008, the Centre granted a permanent commission to women officers only in the Legal and Education corps. After Supreme Court’s intervention in 2019, women can apply for Permanent Commission (PC) in Army.
  • In 2021, with Supreme court intervention, girls were allowed to write the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examination for the first time. As the gender barrier is lifted, 1,78,000 women have applied for the exam. By this, it is evident that now more women than ever are ready for the armed forces.
  • Allowing women in combat roles has been a big debate not just in India but in the entire world. As of now, only a few countries allow women in combat roles. Slowly Indian Armed Forces are also opening up combat roles for women. IAF started inducting women as fighter pilots in 2016. The first batch of women as soldiers were inducted into the Corps of Military Police (CMP) in 2021.
  • Slowly the situation is changing. But the share of the women workforce in the Indian armed forces is very low. As of February 2021, the share of the women workforce in the Indian Navy is 6.5%, in Army, it is 0.56%, and in Air Force, it is 1.08%.
  • In the Indian National Army (INA), which was active from 1942 to 1945 under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose, there was an all-women regiment in India. It was one of the very few all-female combat regiments of the time.

Conclusion:

With the help from Supreme court, women are now allowed in many roles in Indian Armed Forces, which were reserved for males earlier. But the share of the women workforce in the Indian armed forces is still very low.

I am personally so happy with this Phenomenal decision of supreme Court it is a very good step for gender equality and it provides the plateform in which women can show their inner talent or true strength this revolutionary step also shows the faith that indian women can work in any field this step also riminds the strength of ancient women like Rani laxmi bai, mother Teresa and indira Gandhi etc and it becomes beautiful tribute for them. I love my and women. Thank you 🙏

I welcome all the points that you guys have put forward but army is not about gender equality but national security. The problems are not girls in nda it’s the dilution of standards in tha academy the age that nda inducts boys is very young about 17 to 19 year old with a little experience to life if these boys didn’t get a proper training they’ll be a ticking time bomb . At this point of time when India is facing collusive collaborative threat China’s inclusion and Pak infiltration we cannot afford dillution of the standard

Yes its a very revolutionary step taken by the SC, To promote gender equality. But both pros & cons exist to the issues
Pros: good decision making ability(eg. Our mothers, high recommendation rate in SSB, etc.)
Cons: physical fitness as per army standard after pregnacy, can become issue for many thus leading to reduction in no. Of female officers which makes challenge for operation involvement.

It is very good for gender equality but at the time of war they can’t perform well but training make it easy so it is good idea taken by supreme court.
    Thank you

I think broad about Indian women force; women are so great that can’t be described, they play an important role in our joyfully life. Women are origin of this world and they are no less than man. So i think women can do each and every think like men.we know that how goddess durga g killed mahisasur as well as madhu and kaitabh.l love women because we can find them in various forms as mother sister wife and any other form.

As a women I believe in hard word so pepoles should not make a gender inequality in indian armed forces so many girls ask the question that women’s can join para sf the answer is (no ) why because the male officer in indian army says that we did a trial on women as a para sf training but the women’s canot did well so we cannot select women’s in para sf but According to me there are STOPPAGES OF COMBATstill persons specially i marked for the mens that there are also mens which cannot join the para sf so I argues that the government should alow that women’s which are fit for the para sf join to it because there can some women’s which have the power as an para sf officers
And I SUGGEST THE CENTRE TO NOT ONLY SELECT THE WOMEN’S AS AN LEUTUNENT OR AS AN OFFICERS IN INDIAN ARMED FORCES BUT ALSO IT CAN PUT THE WOMENS ON A BOARDER AS FOR SERVING THE NATION SO THE TOTALLY THE GENDER EQUALITY CAN FINISH COMBAT ROLES
